Jazz Man

1995 – December 20, 2011

We were so blessed to have had such a wonderful cat in our home for the last 8 of his 16 years. We adopted Jazz and Coal from the Humane Society sight unseen and could not have asked for more. We did have a few criteria, however. They had to have claws, have been around dogs, not terribly long haired...I think that's it. Well, they ended up both being boys, a bit overweight, but the loveliest, sweetest animals. They had been brothers already. Not really sure why they were given up as you always wonder. They adjusted to their new home and claimed their territory on Nevis Street and had a simple life here. They enjoyed going out in the sun whenever they could.

We got through a few medical issues with Jazz over the past few years. He showed some loss of kidney function 3 years ago so he was on prescription diet. He had thyroid disease diagnosed, as well, almost two years ago. He stopped eating but we force fed him and got that under control and were thrilled he bounced back. When he stopped eating last week, I thought he was just "backed up", but ended up being in renal failure. We were shocked as he was doing so well. The vet said she supported putting him down and I took that as he had a chance, so we brought him home and gave him fluids twice a day. He did not eat again, so today, we made the hard choice to let him go.

I actually opened up the garage this afternoon and put Jazz down and he walked outside and laid in the sun. He was there when Jason the vet arrived and we sat out there for a while. So Jazz got to spend his last hours out in the sun. We decided to have a vet come here and we sat and talked for almost two hours and Jason met all the guys here and we talked about them, about life and death and if this was the right thing to do.

This was one of the hardest things I've been part of. Coal sat right by Jazz in the end, and I think if we didn't do it at home for us, we did it for Coal so he doesn't have to wonder where Jazz went. I don't want anyone to be sad, I just wanted to share and let people know how wonderful a cat Jazz Man was and how lucky we were to have had him. Jana thinks that wherever J may go from here, he'll be a wise and welcome old soul.
